Host your own data.

The log-in page of a StorageBox Hetzner instance by Tobias Lieshoff

Hey folks,

We all rely on cloud storage Apple, Google, Dropbox. It’s convenient, sure, but what happens when things go wrong? Consider the UniSuper incident where Google accidentally deleted billions of dollars worth of data. A simple mistake, and suddenly, critical data is gone. And what’s about Dropbox using customer data for AI? It’s a harsh reminder that when you use these services, you’re giving up control over your most valuable information.

So, what’s the alternative? For me, it’s Nextcloud. I’ve been running a self-hosted Nextcloud instance on Hetzner for over six years, and it’s been a reliable solution. With Nextcloud, you own your data. You control where it’s stored, who has access, and how it’s secured. There’s no need to trust someone else with your information you’re in charge.

Hetzner offers a few straightforward options to get started:

  • Storage Share: If you prefer a managed solution, Hetzner provides pre-configured Nextcloud instances. They handle the maintenance; you focus on using it.

  • Storage Box + Hetzner VPS: For those who want full control, you can set up a VPS, install Nextcloud, and connect it to a Storage Box. It’s a flexible, powerful setup for just a few euros a month.

Hetzner’s servers are based in Germany, meaning your data is protected under some of the strictest privacy laws in the world. Plus, you can configure automatic backups and snapshots, ensuring your data is always secure and recoverable.

Since switching to Nextcloud, I’ve moved away from Google Drive, iCloud, and Dropbox. I manage all my file sharing, collaboration, and backups on my own terms, with complete control over my data.

The bottom line? In a world where data is invaluable, it’s risky to trust it to a third party. Nextcloud on Hetzner gives you the same convenience as the big cloud providers, but with the control and security that really matter. If you care about your data, it’s time to make the switch.

Cheers!
